Culture in Salzburg and Rauris is held high by young and old. Especially during the cold season you will find a magnitude of Rauris customs rounding off the rich culture in Salzburg.
One of the oldest customs in the Rauris Valley takes place on the evening of the 5th of December. The holy St. Nicolas marches with his followers from house to house through the snow covered Rauris. He is followed by two angels, and a few uglier creatures, which are called “Schiarch Perchten”. Behind these creatures are young Rauris locals hiding behind artfully carved wooden masks with goat, ram and buck horns, wrapped in sheep or goat fur. Equipped with bells and a rod they wander through Rauris.
The night before Epiphany a loud: ”GA, GA, GA“ can be heard in the Rauris Valley. The “Beak Perchten” (Schnabelperchten) again young Rauris locals in women’s clothes and shoes braided from straw are up to a lot of mischief in the Rauris parlours. The custom of the Schnabelperchten is only known in the Rauris Valley of Austria – a truly unique custom the world over.

From January 2nd to January 6th the star singers move from house to house and tell the tales of the search of the three holy kings for the Christ child by singing. From June 28th to June 29th the Bell Ringer Pilgrimage one of the most famous pilgrimages in the province of Salzburg. Almost 5000 pilgrims make their way to the Tauern House in the Seidwinkl Valley. Once they arrive a mass is read for the apostles Peter and Paul.
