The golden village in the Rauris Valley
4.000 years ago gold was discovered in Rauris. Gold panning in Austria and Rauris looks back on a long history: to this day hopeful gold diggers are trying to spot the shiny metal at the gold panning areas in the Rauris Valley.
Already the Romans have come to Rauris for gold panning in Austria. At the end of the 14th century gold guilders were minted for their first time from Tauern gold for Salzburg and the high time of underground mining started. Above the Kolm Saigurn in approximately 2000metres above sea-level the remains of the old mining town can be seen. Tunnels, water powered elevators, mountain forges, mine dumps and the varlets’ houses, which during the 15th and 16th century housed the mountain varlets, who had to bring the gold to the surface from the depths of the Tauern Mountain.
130 kilometres of tunnels and shafts were built into the mountains to reach the highly desired metal. Follow the tracks of the gold and follow the Rauris Tauern Gold Round hike for an excursion back into a golden and powerful past.
