Alpine Pasture Hiking in the Rauris Valley

Hiking Hotel in Salzburg

Over 30 managed alpine huts, historic mountain shelters, and a trail network spanning around 295 kilometers: The Rauris Valley, nestled in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, is one of the most unspoiled valleys in the region of Salzburg. Here, alpine farming is not an artificial show for tourists – it is a genuine way of life.

Right in the middle of it all: the Rauriserhof. Our 4-star superior hiking hotel is your perfect base camp. We know the trails, we know the local hut keepers, and we bring you right to them.

Regional Alpine Cuisine

On the alpine pastures of Rauris, cheese is made, bacon is smoked, and bread is baked – mostly right on-site at the huts. You will be served flavorful alpine cheese and fresh butter, crispy wood-fired bread, and house-cured bacon and sausages. For a sweet finish: traditional "Bauernkrapfen" (pastries) or fluffy "Kaiserschmarrn" (shredded pancakes).

Three Valleys, Endless Trails

Seidlwinkl Valley – Along the Historic Traders' Paths

Centuries ago, traders ("Säumer") traveled through this valley with their pack animals heading south. Today, you can follow their footsteps on a mostly flat, easy-to-walk trail along the rushing Seidlwinkl stream – perfect for families.

  • Stops along the way: The rustic Gollehenalm and Palfneralm huts. At the end of the valley awaits the 500-year-old Rauriser Tauernhaus, once a historic shelter for travelers. Those climbing higher will reach the Litzlhofalm, widely known for its excellent cheese.
  • Tip: The National Park Taxi (included in your stay) shortens the hike out – highly practical when traveling with children or grandparents.

Kolm Saigurn – The Valley Head at Mount Sonnblick

At the foot of the majestic Hoher Sonnblick (3,106 m) and Mount Schareck, the valley head of Kolm Saigurn brings the region's gold mining history back to life. The density of alpine huts here is exceptionally high: the historic Ammererhof, the Naturfreundehaus, the Gainschniggalm, and the Durchgangsalm – each featuring its own unique character.

Hüttwinkl Valley and the Karalm – Großglockner Views Included

This tour starts directly at the doorstep of the Rauriserhof. Once you reach the Karalm, a clear day rewards you with a breathtaking view of the Großglockner (3,798 m), Austria’s highest mountain, standing tall on the horizon.

Guided Tours

With Our Local Activity Team

From Monday to Friday, our in-house activity team personally guides you into the mountains.

  • Christian, a certified herbalist, leads dedicated herb hikes to show you which wild plants heal, which add flavor – and why the local alpine cheese tastes so distinct.
  • Ina, our trail running and fitness coach, takes you on fast-paced runs through the valley or guides you through an alpine workout session right on the mountain slopes.
  • Our weekly Alpine Safari into the Kruml Valley (known as the "Valley of Vultures") is a true highlight. Equipped with high-quality spotting scopes, we observe griffon vultures, golden eagles, and marmots in their natural habitat.

National Park Summercard – Included

The National Park Summercard is automatically included in your stay. It grants you free rides on the Rauris mountain railways (including the bird of prey station and the Heimalm gold-washing site), free use of the National Park Taxi and regional hiking buses, and free admission to over 60 attractions, museums, and public pools across the Hohe Tauern National Park region. Additionally, it covers all public transport within the entire federal state of Salzburg – perfect for a day trip to Salzburg city or Zell am See.
